During the early 1800s, the Kickapoo people lived in a large grove near the Bloomington area. Before the first European settlers came to the area, the Kickapoo people lived in the grove. On December 25, 1830, when McLean County was formed, Bloomington was chosen as the county seat. It came from the town of Keg Grove, which later became known as Blooming Grove.
When McLean County was formed, a county seat was created. "would be located later." the Act declared. One of the new county's sponsors, James Allin, proposed to give 60 acres (240,000 m2). Bloomington was laid out after his offer. Its lots were auctioned in a raucous auction on July 4, 1831. The first Bloomington Public Library was built in 1857 by the Ladies' Library Association, which was formed in 1856. The Ladies' Library Association built the first library. People in the area raised $1,100 to keep the library open after it was closed in 1880 because of a lack of money. In 1888, the library moved into a new two-story building at the corner of East and Washington streets. The land was given to the library by Mrs. Sarah B. Withers, and the library moved into the building. It was renamed "Withers Library." because of the money that was given.

The Bloomington-Normal Constitution Trail is a 24-mile-long (39-kilometer-long) running, walking, cycling, and rollerblading path that runs across most of the city on dedicated right-of-way. When the route crosses the major streets, bridges and tunnels are utilized to isolate it from traffic. From Kerrick Road in Normal to Grove Street in Bloomington, the north–south portion of the path follows the abandoned Illinois Central Gulf (ICG) railroad.
For the 150th anniversary of Illinois State University, the Ewing Cultural Center dedicated the Genevieve Green Gardens in 2007. Many architects and landscape designers were involved in building the gardens, including help from the late Bruce V. Green, an ardent gardener whose generous contribution of $5.2 million propelled the project's development, An expanded pathway and more flora have been included in the grounds, which feature a formal plaza that leads guests to the manor's main entrance, grass terrace, and theater walk.

Stevenson, and his grandson, Adlai E. Stevenson II, are both buried in Evergreen Cemetery. They both worked for the Democratic Party. You can go to a museum of gems and minerals in Shirley, which is southwest of the city. In 1839, there was a fire. 64,808 people lived there in 2000. The Bloomington-Normal Metro Area had 150,433 people living there.
In the Midwest, the McLean County Arts Center is one of the oldest arts groups. It has been serving Central Illinois for more than 130 years and is one of the oldest. Holiday Treasurers is one of 12 art shows that happen each year. The annual Amateur Competition has been showcasing amateur artists in Central Illinois for more than 70 years. There are also a lot of community events that the Arts Center helps put on, like the Sugar Creek Arts Festival in Uptown Normal and the Spring Bloom Arts Festival in Bloomington.
The Jerome Mirza Theatre in McPherson Hall is home to the talented students of the Illinois Wesleyan University School of Theatre Arts. From a playbill ranging from Shakespeare to musicals, four main stage plays are staged here each year. Completed in 1963, Harry W. McPherson Hall at IWU is home to a 300-seat theater, a scene shop, and a variety of other amenities.
The Westbrook Auditorium at Illinois Wesleyan University serves around 200 music majors and a few hundred students each year. Most concerts are free and open to the public, and there are many different musical acts to choose from each semester.
